ASTHMA AND MAGNESIUM

Study: ASTHMA AND MAGNESIUM

“Magnesium Sulfate Is Effective for Severe Acute Asthma Treated in the Emergency Department”

Rowe BH, et al, WJM, February, 2000;172:96.-

In evaluating 7 trials of magnesium sulfate infusion encompassing 665 patients, of which 5 were adult trials and 2 were pediatric, analyses of patients with severe asthma showed a reduction in hospital admission rates, whereas there was no difference shown for patients with mild-to-moderate asthma. This study showed no difference in pulmonary function or vital signs. In studies of patients with severe asthma, the peak expiratory flow rate improved by 52 l/min and the forced expiratory volume in 1 second by 8% of the predicted value. Intravenous magnesium sulfate reduced the rate of hospital admissions and improved pulmonary function in patients with severe asthma treated in the emergency department.
